A passionate and versatile coloratura soprano, Uma Dobia graduated with a Master of Music (Opera Performance) from the University of Melbourne Conservatorium. She has trained and performed with various companies including Victorian Opera, Opera Scholars Australia, Monstrous Theatre, Nightingale Opera, and Art Etc.
From 2023 to 2025 Uma was a Rising Artist with the Australian Contemporary Opera Company where she performed in several productions including Endure, Figatroll, The Great Beauty, and an introductory performance workshop of William Barton’s The Incident.
In 2025 she was selected to join Melbourne Opera’s prestigious Richard Divall program as a Developing Artist and made her Melbourne Opera debut as Despina in an acclaimed production of Così fan tutte.
In June 2026 Uma will travel to Berlin to take up the role of Die Kӧnigin der Nacht in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte as part of the Berlin Opera Academy’s Summer Program.
Uma is also a talented cabaret artist. Her original cabaret shows Intolerant and Popera: Sex, Death & Politics (created with Little Train Creative) have toured festivals nationally and internationally. Intolerant provides a unique musical and hilarious glimpse into what it’s like to navigate life with severe food allergies and Crohn’s Disease – all the while looking for danger in every crumb! In 2025 Uma released Is It Any Wonder, a beautiful original ballad from the show.
In Popera Uma plays a game show host, decked out in red leotard and sparkly knee-high boots, whose real aim as a feminist diva is to stamp out opera’s entrenched sexism. If only she hadn’t been dumped by her sleazy boyfriend Trevor just as she arrives on stage!
In 2020, under previous stage name Carmen Modjito, Uma released a climate action song, House Is On Fire, adding her voice to the climate fight.
